Etna Wines awarded with 3 glasses “Vini d’Italia” Gambero rosso

Etna wine – the new Burgundy. Year after year the unique area of ​​Etna continues to produce fantastic Sicilian wines, now confirmed as the new frontier of Italian and European winemaking. Thanks to the skill of the producers and the wealth of its’ districts, the Etna Doc continues to receive prestigious awards in the most important guides.

For 2017, the wines are listed in the guide Etna Doc Wines of Italy and have been awarded the “famous” three glasses. Our journey begins among the best  winemaking regions in Etna Doc production.

PIETRADOLCE VIGNA BARBAGALLI ETNA ROSSO DOC 2013

For Vigna Barbagalli the “three glasses” of Gambero Rosso guide are not enough. This year the great cru of Pietradolce is also the best red Italian wine for it’s 2012 vintage. Produced in the centenary  vineyard  in Contrada Rampante,  Barbagalli (Solicchiata, northern slope of Etna), is an amazing graceful and lively wine that provides a vital ” kick “like few others.

This wine has a smell of blackberries, blueberries and red plums with an underlying tone of  mediterranean flowers and the herb, wild fennel. Producing a  three-dimensional flavor this wine has an abundance  of tannin and acidity that balances with enthusiasm and youthfulness. The beloved son of the volcano, really a  must-have for lovers of  all great red wines.

TENUTA DELLE TERRE PREPHYLLOXERA ETNA ROSSO DOC 2014,LA VIGNA DI DON PEPPINO.

Tenuta delle Terre Nere Prephylloxera red Etna doc was born in the district of Calderara Sottana (motherland  of another wonderful cru of the winery that bears his name), in a four acre  vineyard. where two particles that have survived to the phylloxera. They have nearly 140 years, and are rooted to the foot. In 2006, the Winery owned by  Marc de Grazia, decided to produce this wine separately because the vintage was so wonderful, almost monumental. These grapes created an almost “supernatural wine” with a great finesse. Despite the nearby vineyards producing a superb wine with a very similar character, Prephylloxera  vineyards appeared to surpass all others in this heavenly land: the pure essence of Calderara. Elegant, gentle and refined. A magnificent wine.

GIROLAMO RUSSO SAN LORENZO ETNA ROSSO DOC 2014

Etna Rosso San Lorenzo by Girolamo Russo was  born in vineyards located in Contrada San Lorenzo (Randazzo,Etna north)  is  produced with Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio grapes.

The “San Lorenzo” is characterized by an intense ruby ​​red color with notes of red fruits and pleasant spicy notes.

Including fire, lava and volcanic ash, every district (Contrada) has its own character on Etna, instantly recognizable at first sip. San Lorenzo (12 hectares), just outside Randazzo, nestled on low-mountain slopes of the volcano, between 700 and 800 meters, probably owes its name to the cult of the saint, linked to the presence Aragonese aristocracy. The vines grow on relatively recent lava flows in soils rich in sharp volcanic rocks that guarantee an excellent drainage. The mother rock, in the deep layer of the district, dates back to a casting of the fifth century BC , where the very same Greeks settled in colonies in the high valley of the Alcantara.

San Lorenzo is a unique and inimitable red wine.

CUSUMANO ALTA MORA ETNA ROSSO DOC 2014

Cusumano Alta Mora Etna Rosso is the first wine from the new vineyard of Cusumano brothers in Castiglione di Sicilia, the northern slope of Etna. The terrain is unique, with  a soil drenched in natural minerals, the influence of the extreme climate of the volcano.

Ruby red and expressing delicate fruity notes of blackberry, black currant and blueberry ensures an enriched slightly spicy flavor. On the palate this is wine is both dry and  elegant.  The wine has a dark red color with purple hues, a refined delicate flavor, with balanced acidity and a slight addictive mineral finish. This is an absolute must try wine with its own unique personality.
